Florian Maria Alfen, MD
My personal background: Being the youngest of four sons in a family of photographers and artists, I was born and raised in Aschaffenburg, Southern Germany. My twin brother lives and works in New York as a lecturer for Contemporary Art at the Art Academy and as a free artist. My father and grandfather were practising art in the fields of photography, painting and sculpture. Besides the upbringing of four sons, my mother has been building up a photographic studio, which is now run by my second oldest brother.
As a master photographer, he is carrying on the business thus preserving our family tradition. My eldest brother has been working many years as a lecturer of German Studies and Art History at the Wurzburg University. He is now living in Kitzingen, working as an established graduate secondary-school teacher. Visual components and working manually are of essential importance to our family. Both aspects are of great benefit to my work as a surgeon. Being innovative and thinking multi-dimensionally are characteristics of my attitude towards life as well as work.
During my career as a competitive sportsman (medium- and long-distance running) I had the opportunity of extending my personal values by team spirit, fairness, and the ability to assert myself. Although in the beginning my father had only reluctantly accepted my career, I successfully completed my medical studies at the Frankfurt University in 1993. In the following years, I took special trainings in operative orthopaedic surgery, particularly in the fields of minimally invasive arthroscopic and endoscopic operation techniques:

Due to long years of arthroscopic surgery on knee-, shoulder- and ankle-joints, I am used to handle indirect visibility and high-tech surgical instruments. All this resulted in endoscopic spine surgery becoming my particular field of surgical competence, where my ability of three-dimensional visualisation, spatial imagination and filigree work match perfectly.
Until April 2002, when I opened my private orthopaedic practice in Wurzburg , I have been working at the ALPHA-Clinic Munich as an assistant medical director in the spine surgery section. As doctor on duty, I am now offering Transforaminal Endoscopic Surgery (TES) treatments at the ARKADE-Privatklinik Niederschmalkalden (private clinic), at the HELIOS-Privatklinik in Volkach (private clinic) as well as at the private clinic „Al Shatti Hospital“ of Muscat/Oman.
As an TES (Transforaminal Endoscopic Surgery) expert I have been travelling all over the world since 2003, giving lectures on that topic, workshops teaching this surgical technique and operate on patients for instance in New York City, Oklahoma City, San Diego, Edinburgh, Barcelona, Tel Aviv, Jerusalem, Salzburg, Dubai, Muscat.
